A Season of two Halves – BG (Before Gayle) and AG (After Gayle)
It was the season of two halves for the Kings XI Punjab team. The first half was terrible, where they managed to win just 1 match out of the 7 games they played. Not that they played bad cricket, but the Kings just could not get over the winning line.
Kings XI brought in the most destructive T20 batter Chris Gayle in the second half, and their fortunes started to change. They won 5 consecutive matches, but unfortunately could not win the last 2, which ended their hopes of making it to the playoffs.
The opening pair of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal fired throughout the season and provided stability at the start. Captain KL Rahul ended up winning the orange cap. Nicolas Pooran was good in bits and pieces. The universe boss Chris Gayle stamped his authority on the tournament from the time he was included in the playing 11. The biggest disappointment for the Kings XI fans was the lack of form of Glenn Maxwell, from whom they had high hopes.
The bowling was good and led well by the seamer Mohammed Shami. The young pacer Arshdeep also proved his worth, and Jordan was exceptional during the closing overs. Two young wrist-spinners, Bishnoi and M Ashwin, showed great heart and bowled some really tough overs.
Overall, the Kings will need to work on their game finishing skills. It could have been a season where Kings could have easily topped the table, but it was not meant to be. Kings XI fans will hope for a better performance from their team in the upcoming IPL season.
